Lab-grown fat and microencapsulation of nutrients is the business of this Brazilian startup

Brazilian biotech Cellva Ingredients has just announced a Seed offering of BRL 8.5 million (USD1.5 million), raised with local institutions, such as Fundepar and EA Angels, global funds, such as Spanish Rumbo and Argentinian AirCapital, and ProVeg, a European non-profit organization that supports high-potential businesses focused on transforming the food system and animal welfare.

Another 10 percent of the round came from 151 people who used the equity crowdfunding platform Captable to invest directly in the project.

Meaning. Founded two years ago by Sergio Pinto, former head of the food giants BRF and Pepsico, and Bibiana Matte, a biotechnology researcher, the startup began producing pork fat using traditional methods of cells.

Why is it important. In addition to contributing to animal welfare, the so-called “vegetable oil” is nutritious and cheap for the industries that use it. “Our first target is the nutritional market, but we know that there are opportunities for our products,” Mr. Pinto says. Brazil report.
